Case 1

Piper the dog

Piper is a 10 year old spayed, female West Highland White Terrier who has become progressively pollakiuric over the past month. She was brought to her veterinarian who performed a urinalysis. There was 2+ blood detected in a free-catch sample. A concentrated prep of the urine was made, and the urine cytology was reviewed (see virtual slide).

Click the slide image below to review the urine cytology under your virtual microscope.

How would you describe the cells in this sample? What is their origin and significance?

What is your presumptive cytologic diagnosis? What follow-up test might you perform to confirm your interpretation?

A window will open for you to review the slide. You can scan the slide and zoom in/out. When you're done, come back here to reveal the answer.
