This course will review the definition and pathogenesis of proteinuria in both the dog and the cat. It will discuss the diagnostic challenges, possible laboratory errors and interpretation of protein found in patient urine samples. Further, this course will discuss the pathology of proteinuria and the importance of disease recognition when reviewing laboratory results. Discussion of how to proceed and confirm possible pathology will be covered. Therapeutic options along with monitoring goals will be reviewed.

At the end of this presentation, you should understand:

1. The importance of urinalysis within a minimum database screening and urine protein:creatinine quantification for a patient that has proteinuria

2. How to determine if protein in the urine is significant enough to warrant starting therapy

3. The best therapeutic and monitoring steps for a patient with proteinuria

Ever wonder what to do with your urine culture results or how to manage that patient with chronic urinary tract infections?

In this interactive workshop, we will review the updated terminology and guidelines on the diagnosis, treatment, and follow up of urinary tract infections in dogs and cats. Unfortunately, new guidelines often bring about more confusion as they often go against what we have previously learned. Therefore, within this session we will work to clarify and simplify the recommendations found within the new guidelines and discuss best practice for the management of urinary tract infections in the healthy and sick patient. In addition, we will also review the ideal methods of sample collection and handling so that the culture results can be trusted as well as discuss methods of susceptibility testing and reporting.

Together we will demystify urinary tract infections and improve our antibiotic use!

Learning Objectives:

· Recognize subclinical bacteriuria and feel confident about your decision to ignore its presence while also acknowledging the few times where treatment may be warranted.

· Understand the differences in diagnosis, treatment, and follow up for sporadic and relapse infections so that we can appropriately and confidently manage our patients.

· Feel confident in the collection and handling of samples for urine culture as well as the interpretation of the sensitivity results.

This interactive session offers a thorough discussion of various pitfalls and confusions associated with cytologic review of urine in dogs and cats. Discussion topics range from ideal prep options, how to accurately identify bacteria, and cytologic features of various cells. 

We will discuss:

• Pros/cons of the different prep options

  • Wet mount unstained 

  • Wet mount stained with sedi-stain

  • Dry mount stained prep

• Step-by-step discussion of how to make a dry mount stained prep and why it is the preferred method for cellular review

• Discuss how to differentiate bacteria from debris/artifact

• Discuss what Brownian motion is and why its important to recognize

• Demonstrate how degenerate neutrophils in urine can look unusual 

• Review of casts

• Highlight the differences between commonly confused crystals

• Detailed discussion with several examples of how to best interpret transitional epithelial cells in urine 

  • Outline additional diagnostics that can be used to help diagnose TCC

By the end of this session, you should:

1. Feel more comfortable with cellular identification in urine and how to interpret the morphologic features.

2. Gain a better understanding the pros and cons of various urine prep options and know how to perform a dry prep stained sample. 

3. Feel more confident in identifying tricky crystals and casts.
