Hi there!

I'm Dr. Kate Baker

- a veterinary clinical pathologist helping veterinarians build their cytology skills & confidence.

Why I care

It was 2012. I was an intern, saddled up to the scope, sweating over a patient’s slide.

The attending vet was impatiently staring a hole into the back of my head. "Well..." he hissed, "What is it??"

The pressure was overwhelming.

And I had no idea what I was looking at.

Why hadn’t I learned this in school? Did I miss that day??

My thoughts were racing. I felt frustrated. Defeated. Dumb.

Fast forward a year. I’m a new clin path resident, and I’m nervous.

When I sit down with my mentor, I try to fake it - like I know the answer when I don’t. I’m desperate to avoid that same feeling of “dumbness” I felt just a year before.

Then one day, everything changed.

She turned to me and said, “Kate, you’re going to learn everything you need to know here. I don’t expect you to know things that no one has ever taught you.”

The relief was overwhelming.

Before long, I started teaching students. And after working through a lot of nerves, a spark was ignited. I loved to teach.

Fast forward again, and it's 2017. I’m a newly boarded clinical pathologist working for a diagnostic lab. The job was fine, but I missed teaching so much.

So, I started a Facebook group - the Veterinary Cytology Coffeehouse.

Before I knew it, I was teaching >60,000 vets and techs how to do cytology online. The need for practical, real-world cytology education was undeniable.

So, in 2020, I made a huge decision: I quit my diagnostic job and turned my attention full-time to Pocket Pathologist.

It was time to dedicate my career to helping vets build the skills and confidence no one had ever taught them, just like my mentor did for me.

Finally, today, I’ve gotten to help thousands of vets feel confident behind their scopes through my programs, courses, and telecytology service.

I do this work, because I know what it’s like to sit at the scope, overwhelmed and unsure. The pressure of feeling like you should know something - even when no one’s ever taught it to you.

You deserve someone in your corner, showing you exactly what you need to know - without the stress, self-doubt, or overwhelm.

I’m here to be that guide for you. The same one I needed back then, so you can feel confident and capable at your microscope, too.

Kind Words

“Practical for clinical practice…”

“Dr. Kate explains cytology in a way that’s practical for clinical practice. Her courses are well-organized, visually engaging, and full of helpful case studies. I feel much more confident in my approach to in-house cytologies!”

~ Dr. Brandy W.
General Practice Veterinarian

“Teaching style is superb...”

“Kate’s teaching style is superb! She provides plenty of examples (visual and otherwise) to help retain what you’ve learned. I’ve taken all of of her courses and look forward to seeing what’s next!"

~ Dr. Katie B.
General Practice Veterinarian

“Less intimidating...”

“This was the most useful (and fun) CE I’ve done in 10 years. The modules were clear, organized, and perfectly detailed for daily practice. The analogies (like socks in the dryer!) made it less intimidating. I’m so grateful for this program."

~ Dr. Jennette R.
General Practice Veterinarian
